A summer road trip is one of the best ways to enjoy the warmer weather, explore scenic routes, and take a well-earned break. Whether you’re setting off in your daily runner or behind the wheel of a lovingly restored classic, preparation is essential to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

At White’s Bodyworks, we’ve helped countless customers get their vehicles road-trip ready—so here’s our no-nonsense guide to preparing for your summer adventure.

1. Plan Your Route in Advance

Spontaneity has its place, but planning ahead can save time and stress.

  • Choose Your Destination and Stops: Map your main route, noting petrol stations, food stops, scenic points and overnight stays.
  • Check Road Conditions: Use route planners or travel apps to check for roadworks or closures.
  • Back-Up Routes: Have an alternative route in mind in case of heavy traffic or detours.
  • Offline Access: Download maps to your phone or carry a paper map in case of poor signal.

If you’re driving a classic car, avoid extremely steep routes, remote roads without assistance nearby, or areas without suitable fuel.

2. Check Your Car’s Health

A full check-up is vital before any long journey. You don’t want your trip ruined by a preventable breakdown.

Tyres

  • Inspect tread depth and sidewalls for damage.
  • Check pressures – under-inflated tyres affect handling and fuel economy.
  • Don’t forget the spare.

Oil and Fluids

  • Top up or change engine oil.
  • Check brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid and washer fluid.

Battery

  • Make sure it’s charged and the terminals are clean.
  • Batteries often fail in hot weather, so test it if it’s more than three years old.

Brakes

  • Listen for any squealing or grinding.
  • Get them checked professionally if unsure.

Lights and Wipers

  • Check all lights and indicators.
  • Wipers should clear the screen without streaking – replace if worn.

If you’re unsure about any of the above, White’s Bodyworks can perform a pre-trip inspection to give you peace of mind.

3. Service and MOT

If your service is due – or nearly due – book it before you go. A full service can highlight any hidden issues that could affect long-distance performance.

Also, make sure your MOT is up to date. If it’s due soon, take care of it early. For classic cars that are MOT exempt, a basic safety check is still wise.

4. Prepare for Summer Heat

Summer can be hard on both cars and passengers.

  • Air Conditioning: Test it before you set off. Re-gas if needed.
  • Cooling System: Ensure coolant levels are correct and the radiator is in good condition.
  • Sun Protection: A sunshade for your windscreen can help keep the interior cool when parked.

If you’re driving an older or classic car, it may not cope as well with extreme heat. Carry extra coolant and consider limiting drive times during the hottest part of the day.

5. Pack Smart and Stay Safe

Essential Kit

  • Breakdown triangle
  • Torch
  • First aid kit
  • Jump leads
  • Phone charger and power bank
  • High-vis jacket
  • Spare water and snacks

Classic Car Considerations

  • Tools and basic spares (fan belt, fuses, spark plugs)
  • Fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid)
  • Old-style map in case GPS fails

Don’t overload the vehicle—especially important in smaller or older cars. Check the weight limit and pack accordingly.

6. Insurance and Breakdown Cover

Ensure your insurance is valid and covers the full duration of your trip. If you’re taking a classic car on the road, make sure it’s appropriately insured under a specialist policy.

Breakdown cover is essential—especially for older cars. Check if you’re covered for roadside assistance, recovery, and onward travel.

7. Clean Your Vehicle Inside and Out

A clean car improves visibility and comfort.

  • Wash the exterior, especially the lights and windscreen.
  • Vacuum the interior and clear out clutter.
  • Apply a protective wax to help shield paintwork from summer sun and dust.

At White’s Bodyworks, we also offer detailing services that protect your paint and polish up your pride and joy before you hit the road.

8. Know Your Car

If you’re driving a classic or newly restored vehicle, take it for a few short drives before the trip. Get a feel for how it handles and listen for any unusual noises. Note the fuel range and ideal cruising speeds—it’s better to know your limits before you’re 200 miles from home.

9. Rest and Refuel Regularly

Take breaks every two hours to stay alert. Heat and long drives can be tiring, so schedule regular stops and stay hydrated. It’s safer for you and helps your car cool down too.

10. Trust the Experts

Finally, if you have any doubts about your car’s condition, book a check-up at White’s Bodyworks

We specialise in vehicle repairs, servicing and classic car restoration, and we understand exactly what’s needed to keep your car running at its best on a long trip. Whether it’s a quick safety check, fluid top-up or full inspection, our team can help you set off with confidence.
