A 2000 Ford Transit may not be the sort of vehicle people immediately think of as a restoration project, but that is part of what makes it interesting. These vans were built to work. Builders, delivery drivers, tradespeople, couriers, small businesses, camper converters and plenty of private owners relied on them every day. They carried weight, sat outside in all weather and often earned their keep long after a normal car would have been retired.
That sort of life leaves marks.
This Transit is in for restoration and repair work, which usually means dealing with the practical realities of age rather than chasing showroom perfection. On vans of this period, the body can tell you a lot about how the vehicle has been used. Lower panels, arches, step areas, door bottoms, sills, rear quarters and underbody sections all tend to suffer. Add in years of damp, road salt and load-carrying, and it is no surprise when corrosion starts to appear.
We often see older Transits where the visible rust is only part of the job. A scab on an arch or bubbling around a lower panel might look simple enough, but once the area is cleaned back, the metal behind it can be thinner than expected. Previous repairs are common too. That is not a criticism. These vans were working vehicles, so repairs were often done to keep them earning, not to satisfy a concours judge.

That may involve cutting out weakened steel, fabricating repair sections, correcting older work and protecting repaired areas properly once the welding is complete.
With a Transit, strength matters. Doors need to shut properly, panels need to be supported, mounting areas need to be sound, and underbody repairs need to cope with the way the van will actually be used. There is little point making something look tidy on the outside if the structure underneath has not been dealt with.
Most people don’t realise how much care can go into repairing a vehicle that was originally built as everyday transport. In some ways, working vans deserve even more respect because they have usually had harder lives than cherished classics. Getting them right means understanding wear, rust, old repairs and practical use.
Not every restoration is about rarity or glamour. Sometimes it is about saving a vehicle that has done a job for years and still has more to give.
