If you own a classic car, you’ve probably thought about getting a car cover at some point. Whether it's to protect your pride and joy from the rain, UV rays, dust, or even bird droppings, a car cover can seem like a simple and affordable solution.
But are they actually useful—or could they do more harm than good?
At White’s Bodyworks in West Sussex, we’ve seen firsthand the damage that can come from poor storage practices. That includes issues caused by the wrong type of car cover.
A quality car cover can offer decent protection from weather conditions like rain, frost, snow, and UV rays. For cars stored outside, this can make a big difference in preventing rust, faded paint, and cracked trim.
For cars stored in a garage, dust and small debris can still be an issue. A soft, indoor car cover can help keep the vehicle clean and reduce the frequency of washing and polishing.
Covers aren’t security devices, but they do add a layer of inconvenience for would-be thieves or vandals. Anything that slows someone down or makes a car less visible can help deter unwanted attention.
The biggest issue with car covers—especially cheap, poorly-fitted or fully waterproof ones—is that they can trap moisture. This is particularly dangerous for classic cars, which often have less rust protection than modern vehicles.
Moisture can build up underneath the cover, especially in the UK’s damp climate, and promote rust, mould, and even electrical issues.
If the inside of the cover isn’t soft or if dirt gets trapped between the cover and the paint, it can cause micro-scratches. These might not be visible at first, but over time they dull the finish and can wear through lacquer.
A one-size-fits-all cover rarely fits well. In windy conditions, an ill-fitting cover can flap against the car, causing damage. Worse still, it can come loose, leaving parts of the car exposed.
If you do decide to use a car cover, here’s what we recommend looking for:
Breathable Fabric
Always choose a breathable car cover—whether for indoor or outdoor use. This allows moisture to evaporate, preventing condensation and rust.
Custom Fit
A custom or semi-custom fit ensures better protection and less movement in the wind. It also avoids unnecessary rubbing on the paintwork.
Soft Inner Lining
Look for a cover with a soft inner layer to prevent micro-scratches, especially if your classic car has an older or delicate paint finish.
Weather-Resistant but Not Fully Waterproof
It sounds counterintuitive, but “waterproof” often means “non-breathable.” A good outdoor cover will be weather-resistant, shedding most rainwater while still allowing airflow to stop moisture build-up.
Here are some practical tips to get the most out of your car cover:
The answer is: it depends.
If you have a quality, breathable cover and use it correctly, a car cover can offer valuable protection—particularly indoors. For example, if you keep your classic in a secure garage but want to keep dust and fingerprints off the paintwork, a soft indoor cover can be perfect.
But for outdoor use, the risks start to outweigh the benefits—especially in damp, unpredictable climates like we get in Sussex. Unless you’re using a well-fitted, breathable cover and storing the car on a solid, dry surface (not grass or bare earth), you could be doing more harm than good.
For many classic car owners, a better long-term solution is to invest in proper dry storage—or at least improve ventilation and drainage around where the vehicle is parked.
